Night Rating (QVN)
The QVN (Night Rating) is an additional qualification for pilots holding a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) or Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL), enabling them to fly at night. This qualification is essential for flying in night conditions, as night flying involves specific challenges, such as orientation in the dark and piloting mainly by instruments. To obtain the NVQ, pilots must undergo practical training that includes a certain number of hours of night flying under the supervision of an instructor.

Frequently asked questions
Answers to the most frequently asked questions.
Is NVQ compulsory for private pilots?
No, the night rating is not compulsory for private pilots, but it is highly recommended for those who wish to expand their skills and fly after sunset. It is also necessary for those considering more advanced training, such as the Instrument Rating (IR).
Is it possible to fly solo at night during NVQ training?
Yes, the training includes solo flights once the pilot has completed sufficient preparation in dual control with an instructor. This part of the training includes take-offs, landings and a night navigation flight of at least 50 km.
Is the NVQ valid for life?
Yes, once obtained, the night rating is valid for life and does not require any specific renewal. However, to maintain safety, it is advisable to practise night flying regularly or to do refresher sessions with an instructor if the pilot has not flown at night for a long time.
