Advanced Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (A-UPRT)

The A-UPRT training (Advanced Upset Prevention and Recovery Training) is an advanced aviation training course designed to prepare pilots to recognise, prevent and recover an aircraft from abnormal loss-of-control situations, known as upsets. This training, which has become compulsory to obtain an Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), is essential to enhance flight safety by teaching pilots how to react appropriately to unforeseen situations, such as an excessive bank, an abnormally low speed or a steep dive.

Detailed programme:

Theory

  • Recognising abnormal attitudes

  • Understanding aerodynamic forces in extreme situations

Practice

  • Performing recovery techniques

  • Stress management and in-flight decision-making

Prerequisites

  • Hold a valid aeronautical medical certificate (MED.A.030) corresponding to the licence held.
  • Hold a PPL(A) licence associated with a valid SEP(t) class rating or Hold an LAPL(A) licence which meets the recent experience requirements of FCL.140A.
  • Within the last 2 years, meet one of the following 2 conditions:
    • have completed 12 hours of PIC or dual or solo flying supervised by an instructor, have completed 12 take-offs and 12 landings, and have completed a re-training flight of at least one hour with an instructor.
    • have passed an LAPL(A) proficiency check with an examiner. The proficiency test programme must be based on the LAPL(A) practical test.

Candidates holding an LAPL must complete basic instrument flight training (or «VSV»: Vol Sans Visibilité) in theory and practice.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Why is A-UPRT training now compulsory?

A-UPRT training has been made compulsory for commercial pilots because of the risks associated with loss of control in flight (LOC-I), one of the main causes of aviation accidents. This training is designed to improve pilots' ability to react effectively to abnormal situations.
